KALA NYLON STRING CLASSICAL GUITAR 3/4

In the world of string instruments, there are also its «stars». And undoubtedly – this is the classical guitar. Moreover, the popularity of this model has not faded over the centuries. The first prototypes of classical guitars appeared as early as the Middle Ages, but it was Antonio Torres in the 19th century who gave it a shape closer to the modern one. This model is the standard in music schools and conservatories, and it is chosen by singer-songwriters and beginners who are just learning to pluck the strings. It is suitable for sensitive jazz, noble classical music, fiery flamenco, and melodic folk music. Furthermore, the classical guitar holds the leading position in terms of purchase frequency in music stores, which indicates the versatility of the instrument for expressing feelings through music.

Features of the classical guitar's construction

This model has characteristic differences from other types of string instruments. The main one – is the architecture. The shape is optimized to create a warm and voluminous sound. The construction consists of several elements:

  1. Body. It consists of two tops – the lower and upper, as well as the sides. The top is responsible for resonance, usually made of spruce or cedar, which gives the sound a bright and rich quality.
  2. Neck. In classical models, it is flat and quite wide, while the acoustic guitar is more slender. Due to this neck shape, it is easier to perform complex passages on the classical guitar, as there is enough space for the fingers.
  3. Tuning mechanism. It has an open mechanism and is located at the base of the neck. The tuning mechanism holds the guitar strings to keep them in tune.

Another essential detail is the strings. They are made of nylon, making them softer than metal ones. This feature simplifies and makes playing more comfortable, especially for beginners.

Features of choosing a classical guitar

The first thing to pay attention to is the size. Before buying a classical guitar, you need to «try on» various sized instruments. They come in full-size and reduced sizes. The reduced size is the ¾ classical guitar. Its size is 75% of the full-size (length about 90 cm). Such models are suitable for children, teenagers, or short adults. To understand which instrument is better, it is worth visiting the music store «Muztorg», where we have a large selection of classical guitars: with extended or shortened necks, full-size or reduced bodies.

Besides size, you should also pay attention to technical specifications:

  • material;
  • number of strings;
  • neck characteristics;
  • configuration.

The type of wood used for the body affects the sound. A standard guitar is mainly made of spruce or cedar, with a solid piece of wood used for the top. The choice in this case is an individual parameter, and it is necessary to compare the tonality and brightness of the sound.

The second parameter is the number of strings. The standard is a six-string guitar, for which most concert and educational repertoire is written. However, there are also multi-string models (8, 10). They are often referred to as harp-guitars or extended-range instruments. Additional strings allow for performing complex passages without the need to transpose bass lines. They also create complex overtones, imitating the reverb of a cathedral. Such models are suitable for authentic performances of works by Bach, Dowland, Weiss, or for avant-garde styles.

The convenience of playing depends on the ergonomics and geometry of the neck, and for professional musicians, this is literally technical freedom. The curvature should be minimal to ensure a low action. The width of the nut in standard models is 52 mm, but for complex techniques or small hands, you can choose an instrument with a width of 50-51 mm. It is also worth paying attention to the construction. It is better to choose guitars with a neck reinforced with graphite or laminated in several layers, which will prevent torsional distortion.

The configuration depends on the purpose of the instrument. For studio recording or performances, a classical guitar with a pickup is more suitable, while for learning or amateur playing – a standard one.

How much does a classical guitar cost

The price is also an important parameter for selection. The cost of a classical guitar is influenced by factors such as purpose, materials, and the manufacturer's name.

By purpose, instruments are divided into 4 types:

  • student – suitable for learning, amateur music making;
  • semi-professional. These are guitars with a solid top, suitable for conservatory and college students;
  • professional and concert. Such models are made of solid wood, often of expensive species. They are designed for high-level studio recording and performances;
  • master. These are models created by guitar masters in individual designs. They are exclusive and therefore the most expensive.

Additionally, the price of a classical guitar depends on the brand. However, at the same time, manufacturers' lines have models in different price segments, so you can choose an instrument at various price points.
